You could be at any stage of the selection process and the status might mean different meanings at different times.
I will explain the different meanings of this status and advise how you should proceed under such circumstances. You are still in the running for the job. It is neutral and needs to be taken like that. You are not rejected yet, but not selected either. You should ideally continue your search and not wait until you get a definite response from the employer. This is because sometimes the hiring process can take a very long time.
In case you wait for a long time and eventually end up getting rejected, you would have wasted a lot of time, that could be best spent on different prospects. In some cases, companies are disorganized and hence do not update each application status. This means that your application might have gotten rejected but they never bothered to update the status.
This hiring professional may be a manager, HR employee, or the owner of a business, and depending on the other roles of the person, it might take a while for them to get to the next step in the process. If any dates mark the end of the application process, you can expect the person in charge of hiring to start reviewing applications within five days of that date.
However, it may take longer if that person is on leave, has more important duties, or wants to wait until the beginning of the next month or pay period. Many things can make this process longer, so it is crucial to be patient. During this stage, the person in charge of hiring will start to read through all of the application materials they received from interested candidates.
Hirers have to go through every single document and read them. This process can be tedious and, sometimes, boring, which is why your application materials should be outstanding and unique.
This process can take only a day if there are only a few other candidates, but it can also take a very long time to pare down the applications. You may receive a call from the person who read through your job application during the screening process. Screening is a good sign for getting a job since it means that the hirer selected your resume as one of the best. Depending on the job you applied for, the person who calls you may look for certain things from your interaction.
Overall, though, they will ask if you are still interested in the job and ensure that you did not accept a position somewhere else. Promptly answering this call can also make you more likely to get an interview, so keep your phone close after applying. Employers will review your application during the interview process and ask you some questions to see if you are a good fit for the position. Your interviewer will determine if your goals are ideal for the job, have good communication skills, and have a genuine interest in the company or business.
It's not like a recruiter is going to decide to engage you and suddenly your status clicks over in your candidate dashboard. A recruiter might call you despite no change in your official status. You might end up being "under review" until an offer is made.
Precision is an illusion. For your application status to change, it requires the recruiter to take the time to move you to the next stage of the process in their system. It's kind of like getting bills. You don't necessarily pay them all as they come in, but you have a few pile up and it's time to get some payments made. It really depends on the workload and work style of the recruiter. I know that the lack of transparency in the recruiting process can cause a lot of anxiety for job-seekers.
I'd like to think that companies are trying to do the right thing by supplying status updates. But often, these status updates are just a means to placate anxious candidates. The accuracy is lacking. If you have had a positive experience with applications status updates, that's great.
